                        Solid Wood Makes the Difference

At DCAL we take a much different approach. Our manufacturing facility is designed to produce nothing but athletic lockers.  We opt to use real plywood to construct the shell of our lockers. We also make all of our fronts ( i.e. locker trim, door faces, edges) of solid wood. By doing this your locker is lighter, stronger, looks better, and is also easy to refinish whenever necessary.

Many of the locker companies today like to use MDF or particle board to construct their wood lockers.

MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) is made from waste wood fibres which are glued under heat and pressure. The problem with MDF is that most MDF slowly releases urea formaldehyde which is an irritant to the eyes and lungs. It is also heavier, and not as strong as plywood.

The other problem with MDF is that it does not hold screws and fasteners as well as plywood. When a screw breaks out of the MDF, it usually takes a chunk of the material with it. This kind of damage takes more time and money to repair.

At DCAL we also choose to use stainless steel screws and hardware in the construction of our lockers. In a locker room, moisture from wet clothing and shower rooms, is a major factor in the life of all of your athletic equipment and wood lockers. By using stainless steel screws and hardware, we offset the effect of moisture in the room. There will be no discoloration or rust accumulation on those screws, compromising the locker quality.
